Camp Mentor Job Description

Position: Mentor

Salary: First year – $20 a day (there is no annual pay increase) Skill Additions: $5 a day – Life Guard Certification; $5 a day – 21 years old and pass UNL van driver’s test or CDL with passenger endorsement

1. Must be at least 17 years of age on or before June 1, 2012
2. Desire and ability to work with children and adults in camp setting
3. Ability to accept guidance and supervision
4. Ability to work cooperatively with other staff in a team-oriented environment
5. Ability to relate to one’s peer group
6. Good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self control
7. Ability to accept guidance and supervision.

Responsible To: Cabin Director, Program Assistant and Program Director

General and Specific Responsibilities:
1. Create and contribute to a healthy, safe, and positive educational atmosphere which meets the needs of campers.
a. Carry out established roles in enforcing camp safety rules and supervising camper health
b. Abide by the 4-H Camp Code of Conduct and the rules and regulations in the:
1. Operations and Program Handbook
2. Health Care Handbook
c. Set a positive example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, manners, sportsmanship, etc.
d. Provide opportunities for campers/counselors to experience success during camp
e. Help each participant meet the 4-H camping program goals
2. To supervise counselors and campers.
a. Ensure that campers and counselors wake on time know and communicate proper attire for the day and activity.
b. Conduct or delegate responsibility for inspection of cabins and areas.
c. Assist those camper and staff who may need help fitting into camp atmosphere
d. Be knowledgeable about the eating habits and diets of campers.
e. Correct or reprimand counselors as soon as possible (in private), for actions that put health and safety of a camper at risk
f. Check with and excuse counselors from the group at campers’ curfew and after campers are in bed.
g. Inform cabin director of any camper problems
h. Discuss with the cabin director the performance of counselors
i. These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.
Essential Functions:
1. Ability to communicate and work with groups of different age and skill levels, and provide necessary instruction to campers
2. Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
3. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities
4. Physical strength and ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid, spot and belay participants, lift/load canoes, and maintain constant supervision of campers
5. Cognitive and communicative abilities to plan and conduct activities to achieve 4-H Camp Program goals
