The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension 4-H Youth Development Program is providing youth, ages 14-18 (as of January 1), an opportunity to engage in the use of technology while increasing their personal knowledge in a particular content area, by participating in a Virtual 4-H Club.
Virtual 4-H Clubs are groups of youth who use technology to connect with other youth who have an interest in learning more about a particular 4-H educational content area. Virtual 4-H Clubs take the traditional 4-H club environment to a new level by using technology, such as Web seminars and course management systems. Club members and volunteer leaders from across Nebraska participate in club meetings from their home, community, or school.
Traditional club activities, like pledges, roll call, youth leadership and service opportunities, and recreational activities, are present within the Virtual 4-H Club setting; yet, the appearance of these activities is presented in a unique way using the technology that is connecting participants across the state. Each Virtual 4-H Club has one particular focus area; a University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension faculty member presents information on the topic and works with youth to apply the information to their interests and experiences.
Two Club Focus Areas are being offered as a part of the 2009 Virtual 4-H Club Program:
- Discovering Food
- Discovering Multimedia
Enrollment is now open until May 15, 2009, for Virtual 4-H Club membership. Youth who are interested in being a club member of the Virtual 4-H Club must read and complete the following:
Volunteers who are potentially interested in assisting with the Virtual 4-H Club may indicate their interest in learning more about this role by completing the online participation form by May 8, 2009; all interested volunteers will be contacted by phone from the State 4-H Office to discuss the roles and responsibilities of being a Virtual 4-H Club Leader, and at that time, leaders may denote their interest in continued participation. Club meetings will be held from May to August 2009. Additional questions may be sent to Tracy Pracheil at tpracheil2@unl.edu.
