Public Speaking

PURPOSE:
Through participation in the 4-H Public Speaking program 4-H’ers will:
  • Develop skills for communicating about real issues to real audiences.
  • Learn how to organize and prepare a speech.
  • Develop speech delivery skills.
  • Learn how to present themselves to others.
  • Develop self confidence.
AUDIENCE:

The 4-H Public Speaking program is open to all youth in Nebraska. Youth can participate at the county, regional and state level. Refer to the As You Speak publication for descriptions, rules, age divisions and categories. This publication also includes helpful information on how to write a speech and PSA. The Contest is divided into levels based on age. Additional categories or age groups may be offered at the County level.

EACH COUNTY MAY SEND THREE INDIVIDUALS IN EACH SPEECH AND PSA DIVISION. ALL DIVISIONS MUST INCORPORATE 4-H INTO THEIR SPEECH.

STAFF INVOLVEMENT:
  1. Promote and encourage youth to develop speaking skills by providing educational opportunities in the club or county.
  2. Conduct a county contest. Order ribbons from the state 4-H office on the form provided under the Forms section of this website. Please check Alerts for updates.
  3. Have contestants complete the Regional contestant entry and speech outline and to mail to the youth specialist in the district.
