2009 National 4-H Week

2009 National 4-H Youth Science Day

During the 2009 National 4-H Week, to be held during the week of October 4-10, the second annual 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD) will take place on Wednesday, October 7, 2009!  Each year on 4-H National Youth Science Day, a designated science activity experiment will be made available to the 6 million 4-H youth, plus parents, teachers, students, and youth organizations across the nation.

Be sure to register on the NYSD Web site at http://www.4-H.org/NYSD to view general information, experiment guides, promotional toolkits, and the opportunity to order pre-packaged experiment. Additional features, information, and promotions will be added throughout the month of August and September.

Nebraska Promotion

As Nebraska prepares to participate in the 4-H National Youth Science Day, we ask that you make plans to encourage youth in your community to join others nationwide in the science activity experiment! Perhaps this is adding a science experiment to a previously-scheduled event, hosting a special science experiment event, or sharing the science experiment information with local teachers.

Youth will also have the opportunity to post a YouTube video of themselves, their club, or youth in their county completing the experiment, and then linking it to a Google Map, so that everyone can visually see the experiments taking place across the state!

2008 National 4-H Week and 2009 Nebraska 4-H Month
Keeping It Green

4-H National Youth Science Day
During the 2008 National 4-H Week, to be held during the week of October 5-11, 2008, the first annual 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD) will take place on Wednesday, October 8, 2008!  Each year on 4-H National Youth Science Day, a designated science activity experiment will be made available to the 6 million 4-H youth, plus parents, teachers, students, and youth organizations across the nation.

The national science activity supports the goal established by National 4-H Council of attracting 1 million new youth to 4-H science, engineering, and technology programs by the year 2013.  This year’s science experiment (available online at http://www.4-h.org) focuses on the environment and will use science principles to teach youth across the country about the importance of water conservation.  The experiment is short, requires items that are routinely available, and is aimed most effectively toward youth in grades 3-8.

While information regarding the first annual 4-H National Youth Science Day is just now being shared with states and counties across the country, we anticipate sharing a very successful report with National 4-H Council regarding how Nebraska implemented the science activity experiment in many counties across our state.  Nationally, the 4-H Youth Development Program has identified science, engineering and technology (SET) as a focus area, and as 4-H faculty/staff members, it is our duty to uphold this focus area and to generate excitement surrounding science-based activities by participating in national activities.

As Nebraska prepares to participate in the 4-H National Youth Science Day, we ask that you make plans to encourage youth in your community to join others nationwide in the science activity experiment:

  1. Adding Science Experiment to Previously-Scheduled Event
Do you already have a special 4-H event or some other type of educational opportunity for youth (afterschool, school enrichment, club meeting) scheduled to take place on one of the days during National 4-H Week?  Then reserve some time for youth to conduct the science activity experiment and join youth nationwide in celebration of 4-H National Youth Science Day!
  2. Hosting Special Science Experiment Event
Do you have a few 4-H youth who are very passionate about gaining new science, engineering and technology skills and knowledge?  Then invite 4-H youth to the UNL Extension office anytime during National 4-H Week to conduct the experiment!
  3. Sharing Science Experiment Information with Local Science Teachers
The 4-H National Youth Science Day is not just for current 4-H youth – it’s about expanding our programs to other youth as well!  Science teachers within your community’s school systems may be very interested in implementing the science activity experiment into their lesson plan during National 4-H Week.  Share with them the details regarding this special event!
  4. Encouraging Youth Participation in live Nebraska Science Experiment Video Stream
On the eve of 4-H National Youth Science Day – Tuesday, October 7, a live Web video stream will be held, where Nebraska youth can join from their home or other location and conduct the science activity experiment! Actual 4-H youth will be featured leading the science activities on the video stream, and participating youth may follow along through the steps of the experiment.  An experiment supply list and instructions regarding how to join the video stream will be available soon.
