1) State Fair Questions/Answers
Source: State 4-H Office
Several questions arisen related to the future of State Fair, premiums, Amendment 4, etc. Here is information that may help you provide answers to clientele:
Q: Premiums are being awarded for this year's
State Fair. Will this make increase exhibits and make the fair better for
4-H'ers?
A: Premiums are a form of reward for the time and effort that youth have put
into their projects. For these reasons, it is good that they have been reinstated.
However, the life skills learned through participating in 4-H projects outweigh
any monetary rewards.
Q: Will the dollar value of premiums increase?
Will there be premiums for red ribbons?
A: The dollar value of premiums will not increase; it will be similar to previous
years. As in the past, red ribbons will not receive premiums.
Q: What will 4-H do if there is not a State Fair next year?
A: 4-H will continue to serve the youth and families of Nebraska by providing
educational experiences that focus on life skill development. State Fair is
a way to provide recognition for 4-H youth, but it is only one aspect of the
overall education provided by 4-H. If there is not a State Fair, 4-H will
explore other possible ways to continue to recognize 4-Hers for their project
achievements and development of life skills.
Q: Are you planning for next year's State Fair?
A: 4-H will continue to plan for ways to recognize 4-Hers for their achievements,
regardless of whether that occurs at State Fair or through other ways.
Q: What is Amendment 4 and what does it mean
to the State Fair?
A: In November, the people of Nebraska will have the opportunity to give their
input as to future funding for the State Fair. All interested should take
part in that election. More information on Amendment 4, which if passed would
require a portion of the proceeds of the Nebraska lottery to be appropriated
by the Legislature to the Nebraska State Fair, is available from the Nebraska
Unicameral. Specific information on LR 209 can be found at the following website:

4) Staff Position Development in the State 4-H Office
Source: State 4-H Office
A variety of changes are occurring within the State 4-H Office; we would like to share the progress on the following positions:
Nicole Coffey recently accepted a new position with the State of Nebraska in the Department of Education. Nicoles final day at the State 4-H Office was last Thursday; however, she has agreed to assist with the State Fair. Interviews are currently being conducted to fill this position immediately.
A search committee has also been developed in anticipation of filling the new Science and Technology 4-H Specialist position. This position will enhance the work of Nebraska 4-H in the areas of science and technology. The position announcement has been advertised in a variety of locations; review of applications begins October 1, 2004, and will continue until the position is filled or the search is closed.
Finally, the 4-H Camp position previously held by Bernie Lorkovic has been reclassified as an Extension Educator position. This focus area of this reclassified position will be in the area of evaluation strategies and on the long-term planning of the 4-H camps. Once the position description has been finalized, the job announcement and closing date will be made available to the public.
