Leader Requirements

Timeline:

  • 8 to 10 months before event   
    1. Purchase and review WHEP student manual and leader's guide
    2. Attend district 4-H training (if available)
    3. Solicit assistant leader
    4. Acquire WHEP youth participants
    5. Begin monthly or biweekly meetings using manuals, sample maps, visiting natural areas and inviting local natural resource professionals
  • Two months before event       
    1. Pre-register for event and send in money
  • One week before event
    1. Notify WHEP committee chairperson of junior and senior team members and alternates
  • At Event
    1. Be prepared to travel to Cozad, Nebraska and allow 2 full days for event  

Requirements: Leaders under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult in traveling to state and national contests. Leaders must have either academic training or experience in natural sciences and interest in youth education. Past coaches have been vocational agriculture and biology teachers as well as parents with background or interest in hunting and/or fishing.

This program gives participants practical knowledge, skills and abilities that prepare them for college careers in wildlife sciences.
