Activity I: Identifying Wildlife Foods

Q: Do both the juniors and seniors participate in Activity I?

A: Yes. Both levels participate as individuals.

Q: Do Juniors need to know only the junior list of animals for foods or do they need to know all the animals that eat those foods?

A: All contest participants, regardless of level, will need to be able to classify the various food types and which groups of wildlife use these foods.

Q: How many foods will be judged in Activity I?

A: 10 foods will be judged by all contest participants.

Q: Will all of the food items come from the contest site?

A: No.

Q: What percentage of the total contest score comes from Activity I?

A: 6%

Activity II: Identifying Wildlife Photos

Q: Do both the Juniors and Seniors participate in Activity II?

A: Yes. Both levels participate as individuals.

Q: How many wildlife species will need to be identified in Activity II?

A: Juniors: 20 wildlife species. Seniors: 25 wildlife species.

Q: Where does the list of animals for Activity II come from?

A: From the ‘Downloads’ page on this website, is a compiled list of common wildlife species that either are native to Nebraska and/or have been observed within the states boundaries. This list also contains wildlife species that are common throughout the United States and may be needed to be known at the National WHEP Contest.

Q: Do Juniors need to know this entire list?

A: No. Those listed with an S will be Senior-level wildlife species only.

Q: Will I need to know how to spell and punctuate the name of the wildlife species to be identified?

A: Yes. Correct spelling and punctuation will be required by all contest participants.

Q: What percentage of the total contest score comes from Activity II?

A: 11%

Activity III: Basic Wildlife Habitat Knowledge

Q: Do both the Juniors and Seniors participate in Activity III?

A: Yes. Both levels participate as individuals.

Q: In what format is Activity III and how questions will need to be answered?

A: 30 Multiple-choice questions.

Q: Where do the questions for Activity III come from?

A: From the ‘Downloads’ page on this website, is a link to the Participant’s Manual of the Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Handbook, 2nd Edition.

Q: What percentage of the total contest score comes from Activity III?

A: 11%

Activity IV: Interpreting Wildlife Habitat

Q: Do both the Juniors and Seniors participate in Activity IV?

A: Yes. Both levels participate as individuals.

Q: How many aerial photos will be ranked in Activity IV?

A: 3 sets of 4 aerial photos each.

Q: How many wildlife species will be ranked for the aerial photos in Activity IV?

A: 1 wildlife species per set.

Q: How are aerial photo rankings scored and evaluated?

A: All participants give a written defense and reasons for their ranking on each set of 4 aerial photographs.

Q: What percentage of the total contest score comes from Activity IV?

A: 11%

Activity V: On-site Habitat Management Recommendations

Q: Do both the Juniors and Seniors participate in Activity V?

A: Yes. Both levels participate as individuals.

Q: How many species will be judged in Activity V?

A: Juniors: 4 wildlife species. Seniors: 6 wildlife species.

Q: What percentage of the total contest score comes from Activity V?

A: 11%

Activity VI: Wildlife Management Plans

Q: Do both the Juniors and Seniors participate in Activity V?

A: Yes. Both levels participate as members of a team.

Q: What is the wildlife management plan activity?

A: The WMP Activity is a role-playing activity in which the participants take the role as wildlife consultants. They develop a plan to increase/decrease the number of desired species of wildlife. Plans should take into consideration the land-owners objectives, financial or other restrictions provided in the plan brief.

Q: What level type of wildlife management plans do Juniors develop? Seniors?

A: Junior division participants develop an urban plan. Senior division participants develop a rural plan.

Q: How many species will be judged in Activity VI?

A: Both levels will have 4 wildlife species.

Q: How will wildlife management plans be scored and evaluated?

A: Both plans, regardless of division, are presented in an oral presentation to the judges. This presentation is presented as a team; however, each team member must be prepared to individually answer questions about their management plan to the judges.

Q: Where is Activity VI conducted?

A: Activity VI will occur offsite of the contest location. Transportation to/from the site will be provided.

Q: What percentage of the total contest score comes from Activity VI?

A: 50%

Miscellaneous Questions

Q: Will rulers and landscaping templates be provided by the contest organizers?

A: Yes. These items will be inspected by the WHEP Judges.

Q: Can contestants have any other notebook paper, notes, or similar items during the contest?

A: No. Only items inspected by the WHEP Judges.

Q: Should contestants bring their own clipboards, and writing instruments?

A: Yes. They are responsible for these items.

Q: During the contest, can contestants speak to one another?

A: Contestants can converse only during the team activities. Otherwise it is not allowed.
