Health Manager Job Description

Job Summary:

The Health Manager must be able to fulfill the duties of a Health Aid. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: health checks, medication management, maintaining the health room, and caring for ill campers. This position is responsible for helping to maintain a safe, clean summer program site and establish a positive relationship with all program participants and their families. The Health Manager will provide a positive role model to the Nebraska 4-H camper.

Training Needs:

Must attend Pre-Camp Trainings. Must attend all Staff Meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years old. 
  • Must possess the maturity and skills needed to successfully fulfill the requirements of the position. 
  • Ability to work well with children.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor other staff members.
  • Ability to organize camp schedules.
  • Strong programming background.
  • Interest and experience with outdoor activities.
  • Demonstrated health experience is preferred and an interest in nursing or medical degree a bonus

Responsible for:

  1. Oversee the total health program and follow all procedures.
  2. Screen all campers as they arrive at camp, check for sickness, recent illness and prior injuries, possible abuse, or medical conditions.
  3. Care for all health concerns and incidents as much as possible and determine when emergency or hospital care is necessary, always following the established procedures as assigned by the camp Health Manager.
  4. Be available and ready for emergencies by being at the location of the majority of campers during activities.
  5. Be “on-call” via camp radio at all times during camp.
  6. In partnership with Camp Administration Team, call parents as seen fit regarding medical issues or because a child may need to go home due to illness.
  7. Complete “clean cabin checks” daily and provide cabins with their scores at mealtimes; participate in reward for cleanest cabin each week.
  8. Collect all camper and staff medications, dispensing medications at meals and bedtime or according to medication directions.
  9. Maintain an up-to-date and accurate log of all health-related incidents and procedures.
  10. Obtain a health status and emergency contact form from each staff member and camper, and keep these forms organized and readily available for emergencies.
  11. Keep an inventory of health center supplies and needs. Be certain that camp is always stocked with all necessary equipment/ medications as per the Standing Orders.
  12. Prepare first aid kits for program areas, such as cabins, the waterfront, ropes course, and van that comply with state camp licensing codes.
  13. Inform staff as necessary regarding the medical conditions or allergies of their campers. This must be done always with confidentiality in mind.
  14. Holding periodic health update meetings with staff and admin team
  15. Communicating any staff or parent concerns to the Camp Administration Team
  16. Be willing and able to perform other duties around camp as assigned, including general staff responsibilities.
  17. Never be under the influence of drugs or alcohol while on duty for Nebraska 4-H.
  18. Always keep a positive and enthusiastic attitude while instilling excitement in campers
