Beef General Rules

  1. General Rules - Nebraska State Fair Livestock General Rules & Regulations apply to this department. It is strongly encouraged that all exhibitors read and understand the Nebraska State Fair Livestock General Rules and Regulations and Livestock Health Requirements. These documents can be found on the Nebraska State Fair website.
  2. Certification of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) - All animals must be accompanied by appropriate health papers with the exception of rabbits and poultry originating from Nebraska. The CVI must be present and all livestock will be inspected by a veterinarian off site prior to entering the grounds. See Health Requirements for Animals Exhibited at the Nebraska State Fair for additional information.
  3. Show Schedule - See Nebraska State Fair Livestock Schedule for arrival, check-in and show times and dates.  
  4. Release of Exhibits - All animals will be released according to the Nebraska State Fair release schedule.
  5. Number of Entries per Exhibitor - A 4-H member is limited to exhibiting up to three beef animals if at least one is a breeding heifer. Only two market beef may be exhibited. The following combinations of beef exhibits are acceptable:
    1. One, two, or three breeding heifers
    2. One breeding heifer and two market beef (market beef may be two market steers or two market heifers or one steer and one heifer)
    3. Two breeding heifers and one market beef
    4. Two market beef (may be two steers, two heifers, or one steer and one heifer)
    5. In no case will a 4-H member exhibit more than two market beef.
  6. Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) - Nebraska 4-H requires all youth enrolled in livestock projects to complete annual quality assurance training through Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA). Refer to the Nebraska State Fair General Rules and Regulations for additional information.
  7. Show Entry - Youth have until August 10 to declare if they will show 4-H or FFA at State Fair. Youth who choose to exhibit their animal in the FFA Show at State Fair will be ineligible to show that animal at the AKSARBEN show. 
  8. Dress Code - When showing animals, exhibitors must wear the official State Fair 4-H shirt. No exhibitor number harnesses may be worn. Blue jeans are appropriate. Hats shall not be worn in the show ring. 
  9. Showmanship - All 4-H exhibitors are automatically registered by not required to show in Showmanship. Exhibitors must show their own animal and must show in the class assigned. Review the Nebraska State Fair Schedule for times and dates. 
  10. Substitutions - Any animal may be substituted for an animal within the species that has been properly nominated on the exhibitor's online nomination database list.
  11. Grooming - All beef, swine, sheep, and goats (showmanship, market, and breeding) will be shown Blow & Go. Animals may be clipped, blown, brushed, or combed to enhance their appearance. Reference the Nebraska State Fair Livestock General Rules and Regulations for specific guidelines. 
  12. Toweling Protocol - All beef, sheep, and goats may be subject to visual inspection and toweling (before and/or after entering the show ring) using a disposable blue shop towel for the presence of adhesive, blue, paint, or powder products. Toweling of the animal may include but is not limited to the topline, legs, chest, belly, flank, and cod/udder areas. If, after inspection, the animal is found to have adhesive, glue, paint, or powder products applied it will be disqualified from competition. Any premiums (physical or monetary) will be forfeited and no refunds will be made.
  13. Tie-Outs  - Refer to the Nebraska State Fair General Rules and Regulations for additional information.  
  14. Handling Equipment - Halters with throat straps, nose leads, barbed or studded show halter chain leads and other equipment determined to be distracting or severe to the animal by the division superintendent will not be permitted. 
  15. Blocking Chutes, Fans, Generators - Refer to Nebraska State Fair Livestock General Rules and Regulations
  16. Dress Code - No exhibitor number harnesses may be worn. Refer to Nebraska State Fair Livestock General Rules and Regulations.

Beef Showmanship 

Classes

  • G010010 - Intermediate Showmanship (10 – 13 years old before January 1 of the current year)
  • G010011 - Senior Showmanship (14 – 18 years old before January 1 of the current year)

Market Beef

Rules

  1. Market Beef Identification & DNA Requirements - All market beef to be shown at State Fair must be tagged with an official 840 USDA EID tag, owned by the exhibitor, and have DNA envelope and hair sample submitted to the county Extension office by April 15. All market beef exhibitors must complete online market beef nomination entry submitted through official online database by April 15. Heifers originally nominated as market heifers by April 15 may also be nominated as a breeding heifer by June 15.
  2. Minimum Age Requirements - All market beef are required to be born on or after January 1, 2017.
  3. Minimum Weights for Market Beef - Market steers weighing less than 1000 lbs and market heifers weighing less than 900 lbs at weigh-in will not be eligible for a purple award. No re-weighs will be allowed.
  4. Weigh Backs - A weigh back will be incorporated for all 1st and 2nd place purples. A 5% variance from weigh-in weight will be allowed. Animals not meeting the 5% variance above the weigh-in weight will be lowered one ribbon group and will not be eligible for any champion awards.
  5. Market Classes - Minimum of Five (5) Divisions in Market Beef Show - The market beef show will be divided into at least three crossbed steer divisions, one single division for steers of British breeds, and one market heifer division. For judging, divisions and classes will be divided by weight. The British division will be subdivided into Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn steer classes. Steers in the British division must be owned by the exhibitor, be registered by the official breed association, and exhibit breed characteristics typical of a purebred animal of the breed in which they are entered. Appendix Shorthorn/Shorthorn Plus steers will not be accepted in the purebred Shorthorn steer class. First and second place purples from each class will compete for Champion and Reserve Champion of the British Division. If more than one class per breed, classes will be determined by weight. 
  6. Registration fo market Livestock - To be eligible to show in a British Breed steer class, the market animal must be owned by the exhibitor, be identified by a legible ear tattoo, have DNA envelopes and hair sample submitted to their County Extension Office by April 15.Any breed steer not having a legible tattoo, or shows evidence of a fresh or recent tattoo, will not be eligible to show in the British Breed classes, but may be allowed to show in the crossbreed classes. ORIGINAL REGISTRATION PAPERS MUST BE PRESENTED AT TIME OF CHECK IN. Original registration papers or electronic papers presented using a tablet or smart phone will be accepted if pulled up or downloaded from their respective breed website.NO PRINTED PAPER COPIES ACCEPTED. Original papers or electronic version only.
  7. Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Market Beef - The Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of the Market Beef Show will be selected from the Champions of the five or more divisions listed in the rule above. The Overall Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of the Market Beef are automatically consigned for harvest and cannot be withdrawn from championship.
  8. Show Order - Market beef classes will be judged in the same order that classes are listed in the Premium List.

Classes

For judging, market beef divisions will be divided by shoulder height. Classes within divisions will be divided by weight. Divisions will show tall to short and classes heavy to light.

Breeding Beef

Rules

  1. Breeding Beef Identification Requirements - All breeding heifer exhibitors must complete the online breeding heifer nomination entry submitted through official online database by June 15. Heifers originally nominated as market heifers may also be nominated as a breeding heifer by June15. Registered heifers must have legible tattoo matching registration and online nomination. Commercial heifers must have legible tattoo matching the online nomination. Any heifer not having a legible tattoo or that shows evidence of a fresh or recent tattoo, will be disqualified from the show. A calf-hood vaccination tattoo is not considered an official identification tattoo. All heifers will be checked for tattoos. To be eligible to show in a registered class, a breeding animal must be owned by the exhibitor, have an official breed registration, and be identified with a legible ear tattoo that corresponds with the registration papers. Breeding heifers must be recognized as registered and eligible to show by their respective state breed association to show in the registered classes.Animals whose registration papers are not approved for a specific breed division will show in the commercial division at the discretion of the Beef Superintendent. These heifers will need to follow guidelines outlined under commercial heifers.
  2. Registration of Breeding Heifers - Original registration certificates for all breeds, must be presented at check in. Only breeding heifers recognized as registered and eligible to show by their respective state Breed Associations will be allowed to compete in the breed classes. Original registration papers or electronic papers presented using a tablet or smart phone will be accepted if pulled up or downloaded from their respective breed website. NO PRINTED PAPER COPIES ACCEPTED. Original papers or electronic versions only.
  3. Commercial Breeding Heifers - All commercial breeding heifer exhibitors must complete online breeding heifer nomination entries submitted through official online database by June 15. To be eligible for show, a commercial breeding heifer must be owned by exhibitor, have a known birth date and be identified by an ear tattoo (bangs tattoo & ear tag will not be accepted). Commercial breeding heifers will be classed by age as identified on the breeding heifer livestock online nomination. Calf-hood vaccination tattoos (bangs) are not acceptable for identification. Any breeding heifer not having a legible tattoo, or shows evidence of a fresh or recent tattoo, will not be allowed to show. Commercial heifers will show by age.
  4. Minimum Entries for Breed Classes - Any breed without at least 3 breeding heifers exhibiting in their breed will show in the All Other Breed (AOB) Division.
  5. Champion Selection - A supreme champion and a reserve champion breeding heifer will be selected at the conclusion of the breeding heifer show. The champion and reserve champion from each breed division will be eligible.
  6. Show Schedule - 4-H Breeding Heifer breeds will be shown youngest to oldest by breeds in a rotating schedule. The breeds will show in the following order for 2018:
