Food Supply Confidence

Nebraska 4-H works to ensure that Nebraska youth have a knowledge and appreciation of Nebraska's largest industry: agriculture. Through food supply confidence programs, youth gain an understanding of where their food comes from, develop positive attitudes and interests regarding their local agriculture, advocate for agriculture in Nebraska, and become informed consumers who advocate for agriculture in Nebraska. 

Through food supply confidence programs youth develop important life skills, including:

  • Communication
  • Decision-making
  • Wise use of resources

ENGAGING YOUTH IN STEM & AGRICULTURAL LITERACY

4-H programs in this area are focused on developing STEM and interests, skills and abilities young people and preparing them to fill the pipeline of STEM careers. Agriculture continues to be a primary focus of our program and we’re engaging the next generation of agricultural leaders and advocates. As we play our part in raising the next generation of Nebraskan’s, it is imperative that we prepare young with the STEM skills and abilities and a practical knowledge of the agricultural industry that will enable them to be informed decision-makers, consumers and advocates. Further we are working to foster an interest in these industries that will lead young people to pursue careers that fill the STEM and Agriculture pipelines and strengthen the state’s economy. STEM Programs

Partnerships are critical in reaching Nebraska youth. Nebraska Extension developed and strengthened partnerships with the following organizations to help plan and deliver programs:

  • 21st Century Learning Centers
  • Local Schools
  • Local Libraries
  • Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture
  • Nebraska Department of Education
  • Nebraska Educational Services Unit
  • Nebraska Library Commission

Partnerships

More than 4,500 youth were engaged in STEM programming topics such as aerospace engineering, computer coding, food science, animal science, and agronomy. Over 400 students participated in a virtual field trip series aimed at connecting students with unique learning opportunities which brought science alive in the classroom. As a result:

  • 90% of students reported learning something new about science or engineering.
  • 70% stated they would like to have a job that uses engineering.
  • 58% shared they would like to have a job that uses science.

National Clearinghouse Data

New in 2019, the National Clearinghouse Data was accessed for high school graduates in 2017 and 2018 who are Nebraka 4-H alumni. Over 80% have enrolled in post-secondary education with nearly 60% declaring majors in STEM!
