The Grand Challenges of Engineering

Other

During this one-week virtual camp, high school students will learn about the power of engineering and science to solve global grand challenges, as outlined in the report entitled “14 Grand Challenges for Engineering” by the US National Academy of Engineering. The Grand Challenges that we will focus on during this week will be “Restore and Improve Urban Infrastructure,” “Provide Access to Clean Water,” and “Secure Cyberspace,” where you will learn about cybersecurity and cryptography. Each daily engineering challenge will be taught by UNL faculty, students, and staff.

Supplies needed: copy paper (10 sheets minimum), scissors, masking tape or similar, freestanding fan (preferably multi-speed), clean water, 10 small cups or clear paper cups (3 or 5 oz), food coloring, eye dropper or plastic pipet, access to an internet browser, paper, pencil, 50 index cards, beanbag stuffed animal or similar weighted object, one of the following: post-in notes, plastic spoon, rubber band, toothbrush, or binder clip

Mobile Content Creation

The Virtual Digital Media camp with the College of Journalism and Mass Communications will teach you all about mobile media content creation. In today’s world, mobile media is one of the most viewed sources of content, but how do you create a viral video? How do you engage with content on social media? Learn all the tricks of the trade and how you and your phone can create some of the most unique and exciting content for the world to see. Dive into the world of mobile storytelling and share exceptional stories from the palm of your hand!

Biomedical Engineering

Do you enjoy learning STEM and have an interest in learning about real-world medical problems? In this engaging hands-on program, youth will use the engineering design process to work through Biomedical Engineering challenges. Youth will get to participate in activities like Nanotechnology in the Boody, Laparoscopic Surgery, Biomedicine in Space, and Prosthetics and Pills. Youth will also get to experience a Biomedical Career Day where they will listen and work with staff from UNMC, NASA, and UNO Biomechanics. Youth won't want to miss it! This virtual camp session is hosted in partnership with Imagine Science!

Discover Ag & Natural Resources

Do you want to make a difference in changing our future? Some of the greatest challenges facing our planet are in the areas of food, water, energy, landscape systems, animals, and people. This virtual camp will allow students to investigate how these aspects relate to the fields of agriculture and natural resources, and how campers can make an impact on these essential systems. Agribusiness, forensic science, animal science, food science, and fisheries and wildlife are just a few of the topics that will be explored in this camp taught by the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

Join us as we build connections and learn more about the rewarding field of education during our virtual camp: Discover Teaching - Diversity Matters with the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education. Take part in a virtual week of fun and meaningful activities by exploring the pathways to becoming a teacher! Work with other high school students and UNL professors by engaging in dialogue with real teachers, participating in role-playing activities, and taking part in deep discussions about identity and diversity in Education. Let’s discover teaching together!
