Section 2: Identification of Project Animals

Animal Exhibits and Participation

1. An animal (beef, sheep, swine, market goat, dairy, dairy goat, or rabbit) may be identified in 4-H in only one county. 
2. An animal (beef, sheep, swine, market goat, dairy, dairy goat, rabbit, poultry, dog, or cat) cannot be exhibited in 4-H or FFA in more than one county fair. 
3. Youth are encouraged to be active members of both 4-H and FFA. For State Fair, any beef, sheep, swine and goat projects nominated by the appropriate deadline of June 15, will be eligible for exhibition in either 4-H or FFA. The designation can be determined at check-in during the State Fair.  This option does not allow an animal to be shown in both 4-H and FFA at State Fair.  This guideline also includes rabbit and poultry exhibits.

Animal Identification Requirements for State Fair

The information below lists the required identification items for the species eligible for the State Fair.

Market Beef

1. Official 840 USDA EID tag number (full 15-digit number)
2. Premises ID
3. Sex
4. A legible ear tattoo or identification type that is accepted by the association and corresponds with the registration papers, if applicable
5. Breed/description, if applicable
6. Breed association registration number, if applicable 
7. Above information inputted online and DNA sample submitted by June 15

Registered Breeding Beef

1. Tattoo or identification type that is accepted by the association and corresponds with the registration papers
2. Breed/description
3. Date of birth
4. Breed association registration number
5. Above information inputted online and DNA sample submitted by June 15

Commercial Breeding Beef

1. Tattoo or official 840 USDA EID tag number (full 15-digit number)
2. Premise ID, if applicable
3. Above information inputted online and DNA sample submitted by June 15

Market Feeder Calf

1. Official 840 USDA EID tag number (full 15-digit number)
2. Premises ID
3. Sex
4. Above information inputted online and DNA sample submitted by June 15

Dairy Cattle (nomination not required but may need information for entry, refer to Nebraska State Fair guidelines)

1. Tag, tattoo or vaccination tag for animals without distinct markings
2. Drawing or photo for animals with distinct markings
3. Registration number (for purebred)
4. Date of birth
5. Signed ownership affidavit submitted to county office by June 15   

Market Lambs

1. Official USDA Scrapie tag information. State abbreviation, flock ID, and animal ID are all required
2. Sex
3. Above information inputted online and DNA sample submitted by June 15

Breeding Ewes

1. Official USDA Scrapie tag information. State abbreviation, flock ID, animal ID, and tattoo (if applicable) are all required
2. Breed, if applicable
3. Date of birth
4. Breed association registration number, if applicable 
5. Above information inputted online and DNA sample submitted by June 15

Market Goats

1. Official USDA Scrapie tag information. State abbreviation, flock ID, and animal ID are all required
2. Sex

Breeding Does

1. Official USDA Scrapie tag information. State abbreviation, flock ID, animal ID, and tattoo (if applicable) are all required.
