AI in STEM Education Internship - 4-H Thrive Lab
Description of Work:
The Nebraska 4-H Youth Development program is committed to offering hands-on, youth-centered educational programs to school-age youth in Nebraska communities. The AI in STEM Education project introduces foundational concepts of artificial intelligence by building youth capacity in statistics, data science, and mathematical reasoning. This position will work in partnership with Nebraska Extension 4-H Youth Development professionals as part of a team of student interns in the 4-H Thrive Lab.
Specific responsibilities of an AI in STEM Education Intern will include:
- Assist in designing and delivering educational content and hands-on programming that explores foundational skills related to AI (e.g., data analysis, pattern recognition, decision-making).
- Support the creation of engaging resources and activities that connect AI literacy with youth development practices and STEM programming.
- Deliver significant statewide educational programs of the semester (see events and dates below).
- Complete work related to the priorities of the Nebraska 4-H Youth Development department.
- Engage in training and professional development opportunities to learn about the best practices of positive youth development and to ensure a quality educational experience for youth participants.

Qualifications:
Applicants for AI in STEM Education Intern must be enrolled undergraduate students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln at the time of employment and 18 years old or older.
- All majors are welcome to apply.
- A desire to explore ideas related to AI literacy is essential; prior knowledge of 4-H or teaching experience is not necessary.
- Applicants should possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license.
This internship is based in the 4-H Thrive Lab (located in Filley Hall on East Campus) with some travel to program sites within Nebraska. The position pays $14/hour with 35 hours/week between May 22 – August 15, 2025. Possibilities for extending the internship into the following fall and spring semesters exist. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. Specific hours per week will be determined upon hire. Preference will be given to students who are available to attend the following priority programs:
- National Science Olympiad (May 24–25, 2025)
- 4-H Thrive Lab, Training for Student Interns (May 27-20, 2025)
- East Campus Discovery Days (June 14, July 12, August 9, 2025)
- Big Red Summer Academic Camps (June 8-13, 2025)
- Premier Animal Science Event (June 17-18, 2025)
- Premier Communications Event (June 19-20, 2025)
- 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships (June 22-27, 2025)
- Nebraska State 4-H Horse Expo (July 12-16, 2025)
- Nebraska State Fair Exhibit Hall Setup (August 6-7, 2025)
