This publication is intended as a guide for 4-H club leaders, Extension educators, show managers, and other individuals charged with planning and conducting 4-H horse shows and events in Nebraska.
The publication will help establish uniform regulations and procedures in 4-H horse shows and events throughout the state. It should be used as a guide in setting up classes, establishing show rules and, in general, managing the show.
Objectives of the 4-H Horse Project
The purpose of the horse project is to help 4-H members:
- Develop leadership, initiative, self-reliance, sportsmanship, and other desirable character traits.
- Experience the pride and responsibility of owning a horse or pony.
- Appreciate horseback riding as a healthful and wholesome form of recreation.
- Acquire skill in horsemanship and patience and understanding in handling horses and ponies.
- Learn safety precautions to prevent injuries to themselves, others, and their mounts.
- Realize a greater love for animals and a humane attitude towards them.
- Prepare for citizenship responsibilities by working together in groups and supporting community horse or equine project or activities.
Use of the 4-H Club Name and Emblem
The use of the 4-H name and emblem is regulated by federal law. This law states that only activities or programs supervised by Extension may use the 4-H name and emblem. Therefore, any 4-H horse show must have the approval of the appropriate Extension staff member. Example: A county 4-H horse show is the responsibility of the county Extension educator.
Shows or events sponsored by other organizations or individuals and shows which do not provide separate classes for 4-H members are not permitted to use the 4-H name and emblem. In such cases, the title “Junior Horse Show” or similar name should be used.
