Note: Western Horsemanship, Hunt Seat Equitation or Saddle Seat Walk – Trot Horsemanship classes may be held in combination or as separate classes. Exhibitors must wear attire that is appropriate for the style of horse being exhibited and complies with appointment requirements.
(Rider is being judged.)
Tack and Attire
- Refer to Western, Hunt, or Saddle Seat tack and attire requirements on pages 17-26. Also refer to individual tack and attire rules for Western Horsemanship (page 43), Hunt Seat Equitation (page 50) and Saddle Seat Equitation (page 54).
- The saddle should fit the rider, and the horse should be suited to the rider's ability and size.
Class Entry Requirements
Individual shows should set their own age and horsemanship level requirements for entry into the Walk-Trot Class. It is suggested that individuals entering the Walk-Trot Horsemanship Class not enter the regular Horsemanship/Equitation Class. However, individual show committees are urged to set their own entry guidelines.
Class Description
Equitation will be judged on the position of the rider, balance, use of aids, and control of the mount. Particular attention will be paid to the rider's ability to control the horse safely.
Class Routine
- Judge may ask for a simple, individual pattern, consisting of a walk, trot, and back. Pattern work should be followed by rail work at the walk and trot only. In very large classes, only selected riders (determined from pattern work) may be asked to work on the rail. Riders will NOT be asked to mount or dismount.
- Judge may choose to omit a pattern and judge the entire class on the rail. Horse to be shown at a walk, jog/trot, and may be asked to back. Riders will NOT be asked to mount or dismount
